Tier's Comments:     -     Bend shank of hook slightly to give a convex curve.   Lay 2" of blowline along shank, so that when tied in 1/4" behind eye it will be tied in the middle giving equal lengths behind and infront of the tie:   this will make the pillar.   Wind thread down the remainder of the shank and half way around the bend.   Tie in black wool and take thread back to behind the pillar.   Build up body with black wool and tie off behind pillar.   Tie in two peacock herls and a long black cock hackle at the base of the pillar.   Build up thorax by winding the herls behind and infront of the pillar and tie off.   Hold the ends of the blowline vertically, and make 6 or 7 turns of the cock hackle horizontally around the pillar, each turn beneath the previous turn.   Tie off.   Apply three turns of horizontal whip finishing.   Trim pillar to 1/3" and fan it out.   Apply two drops of varnish.

This is designed to create a relatively heavy fly that will still float with the body dangling in the surface film in the way that hawthorn flies do when they finally fall on the water.   But I haven't tried it out yet.
